The Social Impact of The Internet

Johl is a Visiting Policy Fellow at The Oxford Internet Institute, a multidisciplinary research and teaching department of the University of Oxford, dedicated to the social science of the Internet. Her work focuses on digital identity, privacy, and emerging technology.


Public Policy

Johl serves as a Member of the Board of Directors for The Roosevelt Institute. Roosevelt is a think tank, a student network, and the nonprofit partner to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. The Think Tank focuses on corporate and public power, labor and wages, and the economics of race and gender inequality, and works to unify experts, invest in young leaders, and advance progressive policies that bring the legacy of Franklin and Eleanor into the 21st century.

Government

Johl served as a Senior Advisor to Mayor Michael Tubbs, of Stockton, California. A microcosm of the country, Stockton faces challenges that reflect the overall state of the nation. Johl’s portfolio included child care, domestic violence, reproductive healthcare and entrepreneurship. She spearheaded the creation & launch of first-in-kind pilot initiatives, including: care kits with basic necessities needed for new children delivered to your door; a community portal organizing access to child care resources; digitization of the end-to-end restraining order process; and creation of an online marketplace for female entrepreneurs in the city. (This work is featured in the Emmy Nominated HBO Documentary: Stockton On My Mind).

Fundraising Technology

Johl directed the creation and launch of a crowdfunding platform and program for the world’s top public university, UC Berkeley. She scouted projects from across the university, and trained teams of researchers, faculty, & students on how to communicate their work to a lay audience. Projects ranged from SETI (The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), to satellite enabled early warning systems for wildfires, to new micro-grid technology in Uganda, and had a 92% success rate. Multiple teams went on to receive subsequent rounds of funding, from backers including Microsoft’s Venture arm (M12).

While at UC Berkeley, Jas also helped run The Big Give, a single-day, online fundraising campaign that raised $11.6 million for research conducted across the university.

Information Security

At Salesforce, Johl led the research, conceptualization, and build of a series of people-first information security pilots. She led a team to develop a security hub for one of the company’s largest customers, Amazon. The program successfully developed new methods of monitoring, and resulted in remediation of thousands of security risks across 500+ business units. Johl also served on the President’s Committee of the Salesforce global Women’s Network.


Research

At MPR Associates, Inc. (now part of RTI International) Johl worked with researchers from a range of backgrounds in the social sciences, public policy, teaching and technology on a range of large scale longitudinal data projects for federal, state, and foundation clients. These included analysis for The National Center for Education Statistics and The Broad Prize for Urban Education, as well as technology development for The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation & The Texas State Board of Education.
